Weekly Wins from May 4

Every day seems to be a battle in the fight to defeat COVID-19. And yet, each day we hear new stories of the best of humanity. Stories that give us hope, stories that make us laugh, stories that remind us that we humans are still capable of love, kindness, and compassion. So, our team thought we’d highlight those “wins” each week. No matter how big or small, if it was a win for you, it was a win for us. We’ve got this.

Wins From Home

Calling Mom a little more these days..Happy Mother’s Day to all the brilliant, resilient, and strong a-f mamas out there. While those with kiddos during COVID have shown us not one day of being a ‘stay at home’ parent is ever easy, we’re grateful for the extra time we have spent on the phone with Mom. In fact, did you know talking to your mother on the phone is proven to actually decrease stress? So pick up the damn phone. And if your’s is no longer here to celebrate, call whoever in your life bring a smile to your face and a comfort to your heart. Anyone can be a mother, the key is compassion, empathy and an unwavering ability to tell you when you don’t actually have it all figured out, and that you’re still totally fine.

267 people across 16 states have pledged their stimulus check to those affected by COVID-19. The site, Pledge My Check has now hit over $170,000.00 in donations and growing every day.

Now that’s a bonus! A California donor donated $1 Million dollars to the Dignity Health Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, asking for the donations to be divided among the employees. And… now we’re crying.

The best landlord of all time award goes to this guy from Santa Rosa. He and his family decided to use their stimulus check to pay it forward to support their tenants make rent this month. Just another day of humans showing COVID we’re in it to win it, together.

Wins from Afar

Buzzzz… Scientists from Kenya and the UK have found a microbe that stops Malaria. Sure, it’s not COVID, but other things in this world have the potential for harming us too.

Camaraderie is found in the most unexpected of places. The Irish are donating to a charity drive for two Native American tribes impacted by Covid-19. As of Tuesday, the fund-raiser has raised more than $1.8 million to help supply clean water, food, and health supplies to people in the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Reservation. A gesture of thanks to the Choctaw Nation who sent $170 to starving Irish families during the potato famine.

The famed Holland garden, Keukenhof flower garden, is in full bloom. While no one’s there to see it in person, Dutch photographer Albert Dros was given exclusive access to the site in Lisse, allowing the world to see this beauty through his camera’s lens.

Wins From the Frontlines

This week was Nurses Week and boy are we more thankful for these homegrown soldiers than ever before. Fastfood chains are also sharing their thanks by letting these frontlines order for free.

Nike doesn’t need an athlete to sport their winning gear. They now look to our realtime heroes, those medical pros on the frontlines. They’re donating custom kicks to tens of thousands of healthcare workers. Win. Win. Winnnnnn.
